‘Constructing a life around top ten lists of things to do, books to write, people to marry is a blood pressure-trashing existence. But deciding you’ve done enough for one lifetime is the equivalent of nailing yourself into the coffin early with a good book and a supply of chocolate biccies. We all deserve occasional twinges of satisfaction when we get to spend a lazy day lying in bed with a pretty girl or boy, saying arch things about Tory policy and spooning. But for every hour of afternoon delight there should be an evening spent agonising over the ending to a novel, because all-day happiness is rightly a state reserved for babies and Mariah Carey.’
